Ruby McGregor-Smith, CBE is the CEO of Mitie Group a strategic outsourcing company. She is the first and only Asian woman to be a CEO in the UK of a FTSE 250 company.
Born in Uttar Pradesh, India, Ruby moved to London aged two, when her mother joined her father. She studied economics at Kingston University and then accountancy at BDO before going to Serco in 1991. She stayed there for nine years in various financial and operational roles before joining Mitie in 2002 as group finance director. She was appointed CEO in 2007. Her years at Mitie have seen a phenomenal £1.5bn rise in the firm’s turnover, which passed the £2bn mark for the first time in 2012.
Ruby is an inspiration to us as not only does she show what is possible in business, she gives back and is hugely encouraging of other women following through! As the Chair of Women’s Business Council she has championed that women hold the key to the UK’s economic success and encouraged the government and businesses to support us more!
We hope you enjoy this video of Ruby speaking at a Women in leadership event!
