Maharani Chai

On Sunday 28th April, we treated ourselves to a wonderful experience a ‘Maharani High Chai’ hosted by Chintal Kakaya, Founder, Chinskitchen and Tina Patel, Founder Sugarbox.

Described as “a truly tantalising and luxurious Vegetarian high tea serving food with a multicultural influence. In a truly regal style, our high chai is not only prepared with love but served with love too. Our aim? For our guests to be part of a gastronomic experience, from settings to scents, you will truly enjoy this experience.”

Our expectations were high, and our tastebuds were looking forward to this experience!

Afternoon Tea is a very British tea-related ritual, introduced in Britain in the early 1840s. It evolved as a mini meal to stem the hunger and anticipation of an evening meal at 8pm.

Afternoon Tea is a meal composed of sandwiches (usually cut delicately into ‘fingers’), scones with clotted cream and jam, sweet pastries and cakes. Maharani Chai is a Desi take on the very English tradition.

We rocked up at Market Halls, Fulham, where a private room was being transformed to a venue befitting the title of the afternoon (Maharani means Queen). The decor was truly luxurious. The tables were beautifully decorated, elaborate flowers using fresh jasmine which perfumed the whole room. There were peacocks (not real!), stunning ornamental arrangements – the entire vibe screamed luxury, regality, and we knew we were in for an incredible afternoon.

The menu was magnificent – we were in for such a treat!

Some of the ladies joining us share their thoughts on the afternoon. Lorna said

“Maharani Chai was a very pleasant experience. The food was good and flavoursome. The staff were efficient and friendly, but the presentation of the food and room decor was magical…absolutely stunning… so much so we were all blown away! There was more than enough food for everyone, and everyone’s dietary needs were catered for. The ambience was lovely and compliments also to the Chaiwala… the masala chai was on point!!”

‘Delectable,’ ‘divine’ and ‘delicious’ seem to be words that were uttered all around us.

Amrit, who joined us said:

“I had the wonderful experience of attending Chintal and Sugar box events Maharani Chai in April. We were all greeted with drinks upon arrival and shown where we would be seated. Each of the long tables was set up lavishly and had the most stunningly colourful flower decor. The atmosphere felt warm and inviting. All of us ladies sat down excitedly, with each plate presenting us with a small gift bag to take away. Chintal and Sugarbox events attention to each seemingly little detail could be noticed before the food even came to the tables.

The combination of delicious, flavoursome chaat, followed by traditional scones with jam and clotted cream, works so well together. Whether you are an herbal tea drinker or a Masala chai fan, Chintal and her team have it all prepared. You get to experience Indian delicacies, alongside some of the afternoon tea classics, which is a lovely and unique combination.

All of us chatted and laughed throughout our Maharani Chai experience. It is a beautiful event, filled with flavour, vibrancy, and that being at home feeling with an opulent edge.”

We loved the experience – so much so, in fact, we are booked to attend again in September! All the details are here, including booking info if you would like to join us:
