Delighted to interview Prabha Shiyani MD of http://www.flourishwell.co.uk on her business journey, hopes and how she got started!
What made you want to start your own business? It came with a life changing moment. When I got my cancer diagnosis I started reassessing everything including my career and I realised that I was just staying in my job because it was ‘comfortable’ but truthfully I didn’t enjoy it and I certainly wasn’t passionate about it so I decided I needed to do something differently otherwise the next 10 years would pass and I’d still be feeling dissatisfied.
How did you come up with your idea? It came from a need. The need to improve my own health. My first business was (and still is) as a distributor for a nutritional products company. It gave me the ideal opportunity to start a business without having to take any risks because I could start it while I was still working. It also taught me many business skills. As time went on and I delved more and more into the world of complementary medicine and nutrition I found my passion of helping people to prevent disease or helping them to regain health if they were already suffering. I decided to train as a Wellness Coach so that I could help people in the most effective way.
What’s been the toughest part of the journey? The toughest part of being a business owner has been self belief. We all doubt ourselves sometimes but I think when you are going out on your own its tough to build and keep your self belief high but I have found that personal development is key to helping me do this.
What are your fears? My biggest fear is of look back at the end of my life and not being able to say that I have made a positive impact in the world.
What are your hopes ? To help as many people around the world be healthy, happy and living a vibrant life.
How did you come up with your business plan? The realisation that there are far too many people out there that are confused and misinformed about how to be healthy.
How have you financed the business? My first business needed very little investment and earnings from that have allowed me to put money into Flourish Wellbeing.
What do your family and friends think of it? Truthfully most of my family still don’t get what I do but both family and friends are supportive. Although 8 years down the line my mum still asks me when I’m going to get a real job!
What sacrifices have you had to make to get to where you are right now? I had to change my lifestyle in the beginning like not spending as much on shoes and handbags as I once might have!
What are you most proud of? When people tell me that they tried what I suggested and as a result they feel better. It makes my heart sing when I hear this.
What are your tips for any other ladies wanting to start a business? Ask yourself, is this something I am truly passionate about? When you can say yes to that question you will have the key ingredient to keep you motivated and moving forward even when times get really challenging. Get a support network of people that will encourage you and be your cheer leaders. Build a strong vision, write it down and read it everyday. Lastly, you will feel fear, no doubt about it but feel the fear and do it anyway!
