My Unforgettable Journey: Exploring Peru’s Salkantay Trek and Machu Picchu

Have you ever dreamed of embarking on a journey that takes you through awe-inspiring landscapes, historical trails, and cultural encounters that touch your heart? Well, that’s exactly what I experienced during my recent trip to Peru, where I embarked on the breathtaking Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. From the moment I landed at the Cusco Airport to the final farewells, each step of this adventure was filled with wonder, challenge, and discovery.

A Warm WHOA Welcome in Cusco

My adventure began as I landed at the Cusco Airport, greeted by the warm smiles of the WHOA team. At an altitude of 3,400 meters (10,498 feet), it was essential to take it easy and let my body adjust. I followed the advice to drink plenty of water, savour the local coca tea, and explored the vibrant San Pedro Market, immersing myself in the Cusqueña culture. As the sun set, I joined fellow adventurers for an authentic Peruvian meal, met our guides, and got briefed for the upcoming trek.

VAMANOS! Starting the Salkantay Trek

The journey truly began as we left Cusco for Soraypampa, the starting point of our Salkantay Trek. The trail, around 74 km (46 miles) long, is often completed over 4-5 days, with the last day being the visit to Machu Picchu. Our first day involved a scenic drive through the Andes and a hike to Salkantaypampa (4,000 m), where we were surrounded by majestic glaciers and towering mountains.

On this day, we decided to take a slight detour and hike to Lake Humantay. The name Humantay means “The Head of the Gods,” and this mountain landscape holds a mystical quality, where shamans and locals come to make offerings to Pachamama, the deity representing Mother Earth in Inca culture. The hike was intense, with moments of pause and heavy breathing due to the high altitude, but the sight of Humantay Lake was nothing short of incredible. It’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the Andean region.

UP, UP & AWAY to Salkantay Pass

As we ascended to higher altitudes, the challenge and beauty intensified. The second day brought us to the Salkantay Pass (4,600 m), the highest point of the trek. The views were breathtaking, with glaciers and mountains dominating the landscape. The trail itself was both humbling and rewarding, with impromptu snow, hail, and windy conditions.

Our camp at Huayracmachay was a welcome respite after a long and exhilarating day. We couldn’t believe we had tackled that hike in those conditions!

LET’S GET DOWN TO IT to Collpapampa

Descending from the heights, the next phase of the trek led us through lush vegetation, waterfalls, and an Incan site, offering insights into the rich history of the region. The trail followed the Salkantay River, revealing an ever-changing microclimate and diverse flora and fauna.

We also took part in an offering to Pachamama, one of Peru’s oldest and most sacred rituals, allowing the people of the Andes to give thanks to Mother Earth. Pachamama plays an important role in Inca culture, representing the deity responsible for nurturing the soil and providing a good harvest.

Our camp at Collpapampa was nestled in a picturesque setting, providing a peaceful end to an adventurous day. We couldn’t resist diving into the hammocks!

The trek continued, and we eventually arrived in Aguas Calientes, where we enjoyed a hot shower and explored the charming town, a contrast to the rugged trekking days.

DISCOVER THE LOST CITY

The pinnacle of our journey arrived as we explored the majestic Machu Picchu at sunrise. The morning light cast a magical glow on the ancient ruins, while our guide unraveled the intriguing history of the Lost City of the Incas. For a unique perspective, we embarked on a day hike above the ruins, offering unparalleled vistas. The day concluded with a scenic train ride back to Cusco, our hearts full of awe and gratitude.

WHERE THE HEART IS in Chinchero

Our last day in Cusco was dedicated to reflection, connection, and celebration. We visited Mama Sherpa’s village, Chinchero, where we bonded with local women who shared their inspiring stories of empowerment. It was a poignant reminder of the strength that comes from women coming together. A celebratory dinner brought our adventure to a close, a fitting conclusion to a journey of a lifetime.

ADIOS AMIGAS

With hearts full of memories, we bid farewell to Cusco, each of us carrying the spirit of adventure and connection with us.

The Salkantay Trek had taken us through diverse landscapes, challenged our limits, and enriched our lives with cultural experiences. As I looked back at my journey, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore Peru’s hidden gems and create lasting memories.

The Salkantay Trek is more than just a hike; it’s a journey that touches the soul.

With its historical significance, stunning landscapes, and the camaraderie of fellow adventurers, it offers an unforgettable experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart. If you’ve ever dreamed of embarking on such a journey, Machu Picchu and the Salkantay Trek await you with open arms.
