Reflecting Back On 2020

Dear 2020,

What a year you have been. You came with a Big Bang of hope, optimism and eagerness of a new decade. This was going to be the rip roaring 2020’s, big goals were set, dreams were imagined and it’s fair to say it’s been a roller coaster that none of us were expecting.

Full of those twists, turns, loop the loop, dark scary tunnels, there were stomach wrenching drops, bumpy turns, dead-end tracks, backwards movement. Pauses. Frustration. Tears. Screams. You get the idea.

It has been hard.

I’ve been doing a lot of reflection over the last year, lockdown certainly provided the time and space to enable that. This habit of reflection is something that I’ve developed very strongly this year. It’s actually one of the keys to my success.

At least once a day, and more often several times a day, I reflect on my day, on my life, on what I’ve been doing right, and what isn’t working. I reflect on every aspect of my life, and from this habit of reflection, I am able to continuously improve.

This is the perfect time to reflect on the learnings of 2020. Self reflections helps us by:

Providing perspective. How many of us have been caught up in the troubles or busy-ness of our daily lives? Through reflection, we can analyse experience, actively attempt to ‘make sense’ or find the meaning in it. This should lead to learning, insights and perspective.

Reflection brings greater clarity, like seeing events reflected in a mirror. This can help at any stage of planning, carrying out and reviewing life, career or business activities.

It gives you great ideas. Every single post idea I have, or business ideas comes from reflection. I reflect on things that I’m doing or that are going on in my life. If things aren’t going well, I learn stuff I can share with others. If I reflect on something that’s a success for me, I think about how I got that success, and share that too. I’ve had hundreds of great ideas this year from reflection. I’ve implemented them all, because hello, I am a mum two young children and this was the year of home schooling!

It makes you happier. If you reflect on the things you did right, on your successes, that allows you to celebrate every little success. It allows you to realise how much you’ve done right, the good things you’ve done in your life. Without reflection, it’s too easy to forget these things, and focus instead on our failures.

2020 has been challenging, with some days harder than others. One thing for sure is that I am very grateful for the learnings. I’m grateful that I was a part of it, I’m grateful for the new people I’ve met and for the people who have always been there. I’m grateful to be able to hope for 2021. I’m incredibly grateful, and that’s a choice I made and have realised with deep reflection.

If you would like help to reflect on the learnings of this year I have a 30 page download for you!
