Walking Appreciation By Amerdeep S

When nothing else works, I walk around my neighbourhood and just be. No striving to be positive or wallowing in pain. Sometimes I go for a walk and consciously choose to look around me whilst doing so. More specifically I look at nature. I’m a nature watcher. I love observing the change of nature in each season and how different and equally beautiful it is. From the stark simplicity of winter to spring in bloom, the brightness of summer and autumn oh autumn…with it’s ever-changing colours.

I notice the flowers, the trees, the birds singing, the colours, how where the sun is positioned changes the appearance of each thing and the lovely people caring for their garden. Above all, I notice the care and love they give to their garden, their space. However big or small the space, such love is given.

Try it, the worst that will happen is you’ll get an endorphin kick from the exercise or friendly people walking their dogs saying hello. Seriously it works.

Sometimes you might not be in the frame of mind to practice gratitude or be positive or even feel like meditating. However, just taking yourself out for a walk and making a conscious decision to look at nature works wonders.

Oh yes, and you don’t need to be living in the countryside or on the coast to do this, appreciating nature can be done anywhere. I do my walk around my neighbourhood and sometimes in my local nature reserve and both are beautiful for different reasons. The walk I do depends on pain and fitness levels that day so sometimes it’s 10 minutes around the block others it is 30-45 minutes down the nature reserve. Even if you can only get out for 5 minutes In your back garden.

There is something about being outside that can be really uplifting. I totally get that people have different levels of fitness, so always pace yourself. The aim is walking appreciation, meandering,  not necessarily a brisk fast paced power walk.

I have also done this when I’ve been in busy towns and noticed wonderful architecture. Often, I will look up and look around me. Someone once said to me ‘’look up you don’t know what wonders you are missing’’. So, I do now and it’s the fastest way to get me out of my own head.

My appreciation walk will be followed on my page @dipscribes by a series of pictures to show you what I see on my walk in my neighbourhood in the middle of concrete city. Plus, I’ll then be taking a series of appreciation photos in local towns to inspire you to look up and appreciate what is around you. You never know it could be the simplest shift in perspective you need or a quick tool to get you of your head.

Sometimes what works for your wellbeing is the simplest things.

  1. Agreed Amerdeep. There is alot we can individually do for ourselves. Just taking one step leads to another and another. How observant are we? Alot of the time people just don’t appreciate the beauty around.

Wonderful words communicated through your experience. Nature’s energy lifts any mood.
