Memento Mori is a Latin phrase that translates to “remember you must die,” a reflection often shared by the Stoics. It’s a reminder of life’s impermanence, a prompt to pause and ask ourselves: am I truly living?
Life is short, precious and uncertain. Too often, we settle for less than we deserve. We play small, silence our ambitions, and wait for the “right time” to chase our dreams.
But here’s the truth: there is no perfect time. There is only now. The decisions we postpone, the dreams we hesitate to pursue and the courage we delay are all opportunities slipping away.
For many South Asian women, cultural expectations, family responsibilities and self-doubt can make it even harder to fully step into our potential. We are taught to prioritise others, follow certain paths and avoid standing out. While these lessons come from love, they can keep us from fully embracing the life we want to lead.
Memento Mori is a powerful invitation to change that. It asks us to:
- Reflect on priorities – What truly matters to you? Which dreams have you been putting off?
- Take bold action – Waiting for perfect conditions often leads to waiting forever. Start with small, deliberate steps today.
- Embrace courage – Saying yes to yourself and your ambitions is not selfish. It is necessary for growth and fulfilment.
- Live intentionally – Make choices that align with your values, your passions and the person you want to become.
Life is too short to play small. By remembering that our time is limited, we can choose to live fully, boldly and intentionally. Every day is an opportunity to take one step closer to the life we’ve imagined.
