That Time I Ignored My Intuition…

“Intuition is a beautiful gift regardless of whether you follow it or not. There are no wrong paths, wrong decisions or bad choices because each adventure you choose is contributing to the expansion of your consciousness and the growth of your soul.” Sarah Prout

This week I want to share with you why I am so passionate about following my intuition and empowering other women to do the same.

Twelve years ago I left my HR role at an incredible company to follow my dream job at a well known UK brand and organisation. It was everything you could want in a job: amazing salary, great benefits, a company car, working with a HR Director who had won awards and was well regarded in our industry. The selection process was tough, 3 rounds of intense interviews, a presentation and q & a session with the board of directors.

At the second stage I was introduced to the Managing Director I would be partnered with, and although on the surface he said all the right things and came across professional, my intuition was telling me that something was off. There was a red flag going off in my mind but I couldn’t rationalise it. Everyone I spoke to was dismissive of it – they couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t pursue this incredible opportunity, so I tendered my resignation and joined the new company.

It was a disaster.

Within weeks my intuition proved to be correct and the director I was partnered with made my role incredibly difficult. The undermining, dismissive attitude and rudeness was unbearable. I left in less than 6 months having negotiated a release from my contract.

It was the most brutal experience of my career. But led to the most profound insight that no other experience could’ve given me…do not ignore your intuition!

It doesn’t matter how great the opportunity / person / job might be if your intuition tells you to run – honour it! That’s your higher self protecting you.

For a while I berated myself but then it clicked. This was THE lesson of my lifetime: to never ignore my intuition. As Oprah said:

“You cannot hear the still, small voice of your instinct, your intuition, what some people call God, if you allow the noise of the world to drown it out”

I promised myself that I will never again allow others to drown this  nner voice, and for that I am eternally grateful.

How to strengthen your intuition and trust your gut:

  • Listen: to what you are feeling on the inside. It sounds simple enough, however your intuition can not talk to you if you are not listening.
  • Meditate: escape your daily routine for 5-10 minutes a day to help you get into a clear and positive mindset and help you connect even more with your intuition. Clear the mental chatter.
  • Keep a journal: of your thoughts, so you don’t brush things away or simply forget them. Paying attention to clues will guide your actions and help you make positive lifes choices.
  • Surround yourself with people who vibe with you: having a trusted circle of friends and family can help you develop, and sharpen, your intuition. They will empower you to lean into it more.
  • Build your intuition muscle. For a day decide to just follow your intuition, treat it as a fun experiment and see what happens! The more you use it, the more you will trust it and the stronger it will be!
