When Did You Last Have Fun?

“Reclaim your curiosity, your sense of adventure, and have some fun. Don’t take every moment of your life so seriously. Allow yourself to enjoy life.” Akiroq Brost

When was the last time you did something for FUN?

Let’s be honest this year has been tough and for most of us survival has been the focus.  But as lockdown lifts, and normality returns I ask you to consider the importance of fun and play as adults.

Earlier this year myself and a few of the Inspire ladies took part in a 5km Colour Obstacle Rush. We wanted to do something uplifting, fun and child like (and nothing screams all those things more than inflatables!). We were stumbling, falling over ourselves and each other, getting covered in colour and foam, singing and dancing (some better than others!), laughing and howling!  We all said at the end despite the tiredness and soreness it was the most fun we have had in a while! The other weekend I did a 10 mile hike through the Chilterns in torrential rain – the rain was biblical! But we laughed, bonded and made it a fun experience.

As  Brené Brown, writes in her best-selling book The Gifts of Imperfection, “A critically important component of wholehearted living is play… Play is as essential to our health and functioning as rest (but) spending time doing purposeless activities is rare. In fact for many of us it sounds like an anxiety attack waiting to happen.”

Yes, we are all here to contribute, to bring meaning, purpose and intention into our lives. Hey, I’m a coach & mentor and I teach my members and clients all about goal setting, gratitude journaling, visualising, and taking action!  But you know what? None of if it matters unless you are enjoying your life.

Many are living on auto-pilot in the comfort zone and not realising that life energy is slowly being sapped. When we stay in our comfort zone, we are not doing things for the first time. We are not exploring, investigating, learning anything new. We are not growing.

I get that you are busy. And I’m not saying you shouldn’t be productive or miss your commitment and priorities for the sake of fun. But fun is important and should be a part of your life and day!

Try some of these random, fun ideas below, they take very little of your time and/or money. And you never know, it might just totally change your day or even your month. Really, what do you have to lose?

💪🏾 Try a new workout. I went to Zumba last week for the first time – it was uplifting, joyful and a great workout! I’ll be going back.

☎️ Call a positive pal to relive a funny memory. A 10-minute call with a good friend is like taking a vitamin for the soul.

🤪 Get a little goofy. I sometimes pretend to be a posh assistant on the phone when certain friend’s call me – even better when they play along!

🎥 Act out your favourite movie scenes with willing partners. The funnier the better! I often ad lib Bollywood film dialogues with others.

💃🏽 Just dance. Dance in your own living room. Put on your favourite playlist and shimmy around for a few minutes. Busting a move has been shown to give you a huge boost in mood and even help relieve anxiety and depression. I can be found doing ballroom with my daughter in our kitchen (we are big friends of Strictly Come Dancing!)

🎨Do something creative. Without a goal in mind. Paint something. Sing loudly as you make your coffee. Flip open a cookbook and cook whatever appears on the page you land on.

📱 FaceTime a friend—while wearing a face mask, or a pretend beard or speaking in a funny voice. Pretend you are oblivious to the mask/beard/ funny voice.

🎫 Book tickets for something you’ve been meaning to. A weekend getaway with your best friend. A musical. A concert. The anticipation is as fun as the event itself.

😜 Do a fun silly dare with a friend – how many layers of clothes can you wear? Who can sing in the most absurd voice?

👗 Wear something you have never worn—like a bow tie, a hat, or fancy dress—just to pick up your dry cleaning or grocery shopping.

There are many things that you can do that are harmless and fun. Even brainstorming fun stuff is fun!

Take it from Brene Brown: “When we value being cool and in control over granting ourselves the freedom to unleash the passionate, goofy, heartfelt, and soulful expressions of who we are, we betray ourselves.”

Phew that is DEEP! Don’t be so focused on being cool and in control that you can’t let loose and embrace the playful moments in life!

Having fun is up to you. It’s free, healthy and important. What are we all on this planet for if not to enjoy the ride? It’s safe to have fun. Now go do something FUN! All you have to remember? Enjoy every second of it.
